Where hand reading became science, and where it stopped
There is a genuine science of the human palm. It is not palmistry, it does not read character, and confusing the two is how this field gets itself into trouble.
Harold Cummins was an anatomist at Tulane University. In 1926, with Charles Midlo, he coined the term dermatoglyphics for the study of the ridged skin on the fingers, palms and soles. In 1943 the two of them published Finger Prints, Palms and Soles, which founded the discipline properly.
Two completely different things on the same hand
This is the single most useful distinction anyone can learn about their own palm, and almost nobody knows it.
- Dermatoglyphic ridges are the fine parallel lines covering the whole palm surface — the same structures that make a fingerprint. They form in the womb, roughly between the tenth and sixteenth weeks. They are fixed for life, they do not change, and they are influenced by genetics and by conditions in the uterus.
- Flexion creases are the big lines. The heart line, the head line, the life line. These are folds where the skin bends as the hand closes, and they form from foetal hand movement. They are also essentially set before birth and stable through life.
When a palmist reads your lines, they are reading flexion creases. When a geneticist looks at a palm, they are usually looking at ridges. These are different structures with different origins studied by different people for different reasons.
What dermatoglyphics genuinely established
Real things, with real evidence behind them. Ridge patterns are individually unique and permanent, which is the basis of fingerprint identification. Pattern frequencies vary in ways that are heritable and that differ between populations. And certain chromosomal conditions are associated with characteristic ridge and crease patterns, which is why dermatoglyphics had a period of real clinical use before genetic testing made it obsolete for that purpose.
Where the confusion is deliberate
You will find services, particularly in the "dermatoglyphics multiple intelligence test" genre sold to parents, that borrow Cummins’ vocabulary to give fingerprint patterns a scientific gloss and then use them to make claims about a child’s aptitudes and learning style. There is no evidence base for that. The word is real; the inference is not.
It is a useful test for anything in this area. If a service uses scientific language to make a claim science does not support, the borrowed vocabulary is the tell.
Our position, stated plainly
Palmistry is not a science and we do not present it as one. What we do is read the visible geometry of your hand accurately, tell you honestly what is and is not visible in your photograph, and then write what four centuries of tradition make of it — clearly labelled as tradition rather than fact.
The reason we are so specific about the record layer is Cummins, in a way. He looked at hands and described exactly what was there. We can do the describing honestly even though the interpreting is a different kind of activity, and separating the two is the whole design of the thing we sell.
